Workshop Calendar

Sylvia Galbraith is a popular photography instructor who teaches classes for beginner to advanced students in a number of locations in Fergus, Guelph and Kitchener.  She is an instructor for the Commercial Photography Certificate program at Conestoga College in Kitchener, where she teaches the Fundamentals of Photography, Advanced Photography and a mentorship program, Photography Field Experience.  Her general interest workshops are fun and instructive, and cover a range of topics.

Many of these classes are held at 198 St. David St. in downtown Fergus.  This large venue has the space for practical work during class time.  In addition to regular programming, private or semi-private lessons can be scheduled, and she offers programs for youth, either after school or on weekends.

Watch for Sylvia's  Sunday Lecture Series, held monthly at 198 St. David St. N. in Fergus.  These informal gatherings run from 1:30 to 3:30 pm, and include guest speakers, photo critiques, field trips, hands-on demonstrations and more.  Groups or camera clubs who would like to schedule a specific lecture or workshop are invited to contact Sylvia.  These can be held at her Fergus location, or at your own venue.

The Abstract Landscape Field Trip - Sat. Oct. 28, 2017 - Fergus

abstractland4Saturday Oct. 28, 2017  10:00 am to 3:30 pm

Locations:  198 St. David St., Fergus, and the Elora Gorge

Ages 16+

Note:  The class will run rain (unless it's a downpour!) or shine, and includes a moderate hike.  Dress for the weather and wear shoes suitable for rough trails.

When we think of a landscape we often imagine grand vistas, with fields, rocks and trees placed within our scene in an orderly fashion, and a sunny sky overhead.  But nature offers so much more....a shimmer on a pool of water, mossy patterns, contorted roots, or reflections that challenge our perspective.  In this workshop we'll move beyond the usual landscape photograph, using advanced compositional theories and the limitations of the camera to capture these abstract glimpses of nature.  You will learn how to use your camera for impressionist effects and discover that photo editing programs are not required for truly artistic photographs.

The course begins in my studio in Fergus, for a discussion on composition & design, and an examination of what the term landscape means.  Then it's off to the Elora Gorge for a field trip where we'll take advantage of the autumn light to practice. We'll finish up back in the studio for further discussion and a critique of our work.  This class will run rain or shine -  challenging weather offers its own opportunities for unusual subject matter.

The Fergus & Elora areas are especially rich in natural features that are ideal for this workshop.  For those coming from out of town, there are many "bed & breakfasts" and small inns to make your weekend even better. The Township of Centre Wellington website offers lots of information for your stay.

Class size is limited to 12 participants - please register early to avoid disappointment.

Fee: $150.00 + HST

New! Documentary Photography - 2 Nights, Wed. Nov. 15 & 29 2017 - Fergus

documentary dogTwo night course - Wednesdays, November 15 & 29, 2017   7:00 to 10:00 pm

Location: 198 St. David St., Fergus

For ages 16+

A photograph is powerful - it captures moments, it holds memories, and helps us remember people.  Often we form opinions or ideas based on these visual references that stay in our minds for a long time.  We can also use photography to tell a story...a photograph truly is worth 1000 words! Yet in order to tell that story in a way that makes sense to the viewer, the images must have a common thread that explains our point of view, or that relates a tale.  This new course will examine photojournalism as a storytelling tool, and teach you ways to create a compelling collection of related images.  You will be creating your own project in the time between the two classes.

Week 1 (Nov. 15) will include a discussion on how to create a series of documentary images that reflects a single concept.  We'll examine choosing a subject, creating a storyline, artistic composition, point of view, and establishing connections in photographs, as well as the practicalities of documentary photography, such as model releases when photographing people.   You will be photographing your own project in the weeks between classes.

Week 2 (Nov. 29) will include a presentation & critique of your work, with constructive feedback and ideas.  We'll also look at ways to share our stories - using digital or web-based methods, or through printed photo books or art exhibitions. Other topics for discussion will include trends in photojournalism, ethics and more.

This course is designed for those who want to take their photography to a higher level by considering dynamic content rather than technical skills.

 Fee: $130.00 + HST

The Photograph as an Art Form - two Saturdays, Nov. 25/17 & Jan. 6/18 - Fergus

artphotoHeld on two Saturdays  - Nov. 25, 2017 & Jan. 6, 2018   1:00 to 5:00 pm

Location: 198 St. David St., Fergus

For ages 16+

Photography has a long history as an art form, but is one that is often misunderstood when considering it's place in the greater world of art.  How does it fit in when considered with painting or sculpture or other media?  How do we know when a photograph is simply a snapshot, or something more compelling?

This course is an excellent lead into the annual Contact Photography Festival held in Toronto in May 2018.

In this new course, we will examine these questions.  We'll look at the evolution of photography through different genres, and learn how to evaluate our own images in terms of artistic merit rather than as a purely technical endeavour.  This is a project-based course.  You will be creating a series of photographs to share during the second class.  During the month in between classes, you will receive e-mail support from the instructor and will receive guidance as your project progresses.

Week 1 (Nov. 25) will include a discussion on photography's place in the art world and how it compares to other art forms.  We'll discuss how to develop a body of work, and how to identify trends or styles that influence how we both perceive and create our work.  You will have a chance to discuss your own ideas, and should bring 5 or 6 of your photographs to show.  After this class, you will be creating your own body of work using ideas from this session, or a concept you have in mind.

Week 2 (Jan. 6) will include a presentation of your work, with constructive feedback and ideas.  The session will continue with information on pricing your photographs, archival printing methods, creating limited editions, submitting to galleries and other ways to show your work.

This course is designed for those who want to take their photography to a higher level by considering dynamic content rather than technical skills.

 Fee: $195.00 + HST
