Distance Learning with Online Programs

In response to the growing trend in distance learning, I now offer many of my popular workshops online via Zoom.  Classes are live and interactive, with participants able to ask questions as they arise.  Classes are held at scheduled times, with daytime and evening offerings and access to the course recording afterwards.  Don't see a time  or a topic that works for you?  Private sessions are an option, and can be arranged at a time to suit you.

Join us for an investigation through photographs of the social environment - the neighbourhood we live in, the paths we walk each day, the places we meet, and interactions between people, buildings, public spaces and passing moments.  We'll look at our own relationships with "place"  - how does our personal space influence our photography - and examine the work of well-known street photographers for inspiration.

Taught live via Zoom, we'll play with some practical exercises during the class to get the creative mind working.  Students will have access to the class recording for one month.

Nature is the most amazing artist; if we take the time to look closely, we discover complex designs and colour combinations, shifting shapes, or movement in the landscape. This class is perfect for the photographer looking for inspiration and fresh ideas. We'll look at new ways to photograph abstract patterns, create impressionist effects and study compositional techniques, using both in-camera settings and  post-processing options.

Taught live via Zoom students have the opportunity to ask questions through out the class, and will have access to the class recording for one month.

Fee: $95.00 + HST

Online class, live via Zoom

6:30 to 9:00 pm EDT
Ages 16+

Rating: Beginner to advanced.

A photograph is powerful - it captures moments, holds memories, and helps us remember people. Often we form opinions or ideas based on these visual references that stay in our minds for a long time. Yet in order to tell that story in a way that makes sense to the viewer, our images must have a common thread that explains a point of view or relates a tale. This workshop will teach you ways to create a compelling collection of related images. We'll look at creating a series of images that reflects a single concept; choosing a subject, creating a storyline, point of view, and establishing connections in photographs, as well as the practicalities of documentary photography, such as model releases, ways to share our stories using digital or web-based methods, or printed photo books or art exhibitions. Other topics for discussion will include trends in photojournalism, ethics and more.

Online class, live via Zoom

Ages 16+

Rating: Beginner to advanced.

With so many options for adding special effects to our photographs, the traditional, classic landscape image seems to have lost its place as a way to document our world.  In this workshop, we'll consider the work of true masters of landscape photography - think Sally Mann, Ansel Adams, Joel Myerowitz, and others - and take another look at what a landscape photograph might look like with no interventions other than what is offered by lighting and subject, weather or seasonal changes.  We'll look at how camera settings influence our photographs and how to customize them to retain the original characteristics of a scene as photographed.

Taught live via Zoom, students have the opportunity to ask questions through out the workshop, with access to the class recording for one month.

Fee: $95.00 + HST

The Photographic Art Form
Online class, live via Zoom
Dates TBA.  1:00 to 3:30 pm

1 to 3:30 pm EDT.  Ages 16+
Rating:  Beginner to advanced.

Photography has a long history as an art form, but is often misunderstood when considering its place in the greater world of art.  How does it fit in when considered with painting or sculpture or other media?  How do we know when a photograph is simply a snapshot, or something more compelling?

In this interactive course, we'll look at the evolution of photography through different genres, and learn how to evaluate our own images in terms of artistic merit rather than as a purely technical endeavour.  Other topics will include photography's place in the art world, how to develop a connected series of images, and how to identify trends or styles that influence how we both perceive and create our work.  Students will be able to ask questions throughout the program, and are encouraged to share one or two of their own photographs for discussion.  Access to the class recording will be available for one month afterwards.

This course is designed for those who want to take their photography to a higher level by considering dynamic content rather than technical skills, and is suitable for all levels.

 Fee: $95.00 + HST
